Gerard J. Emig received his degree of juris doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1984 and a degree in economics, cum laude, from the University of Maryland in 1980. He is a member of the bars of Maryland and the District of Columbia. He is also admitted to practice in the federal courts of Maryland and the District of Columbia as well as the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Emig joined the firm in 1986 and became a principal in 1991. His primary area of practice is civil trial work. A majority of his practice is devoted to the defense of construction companies, healthcare providers and nursing homes, trucking companies and manufacturers in lawsuits alleging medical malpractice, construction site negligence, premises liability, and product defects. Mr. Emig frequently tries cases before juries in federal and state courts and has argued many appellate matters before the Maryland Court of Special Appeals and Court of Appeals, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, and federal appellate courts.
Mr. Emig also defends employers and insurers in workers' compensation claims filed in Maryland and the District of Columbia. He advises his clients throughout the entire claim process in an effort to manage the case more efficiently and effectively.
In addition to his defense work, Mr. Emig represents clients who have sustained serious personal injuries in motor vehicle accidents and premises liability cases.
Mr. Emig frequently gives lectures to bar associations, insurance companies and nursing homes on the topic of defending nursing home malpractice cases. He has the highest rating of "AV" from Martindale-Hubble and was named as one of "Washington's Best Lawyers" in the area of the defense of civil lawsuits by the Washingtonian Magazine December of 2004, 2007, and 2009.
He is a former faculty member of Montgomery College, where he taught legal research.
